Toy Storage Nation Announces New Board Chair, Recognizes Excellence in Leadership by Departing Chair

PHOENIX, August 30, 2023 –Toy Storage Nation, the only organization dedicated solely to providing news, education and expertise for developing, owning, operating and investing in RV and boat storage businesses, has named Chris Koenig, President of Pacific Property Advisors as Advisory Board Chairman. He succeeds Terry Anderson, CEO and President of Tenant Property Protection, who has contributed to vast growth within the organization over the past year.

“We are extremely excited to have Chris Koenig step into this leadership role,” stated Toy Storage Nation President Amy Bix. “Chris has been a very active board member for two years, bringing both a fresh and personal perspective to Toy Storage Nation as a developer-operator and an analyst who can evaluate company strategies to lead business development and cash flow stability.”

Founding Advisory Board Member Bob Hayworth, CEO, President and Founder of Baja Construction Company, paid great respect to outgoing Chair Terry Anderson while acknowledging that the passing of the baton to Koenig will be a smooth transition.

“Like Terry, Chris has a wealth of experience to share with RV and boat storage business developers-operators-investors. Likewise, he is a sharp innovator in the industry and has the stealth and skills to take Toy Storage Nation to the next dimension of success,” says Hayworth.

Fellow Advisory Board member and longtime industry advisor Jim Chiswell echoed similar gratitude for Anderson’s guidance since Toy Storage Nation was founded more than two years ago.

“Like every trade association, it is not uncommon to see a change in leadership on the board of advisors,” begins Chiswell, managing partner at Chiswell & Associates and a highly revered self-storage–and now RV and boat storage–consultant for more than 40 years. “What is not common, however, is the leadership provided to our new organization by outgoing Chairman Terry Anderson, President/CEO of Tenant Property Protection, since Toy Storage Nation’s inception. I’d like to personally thank Terry for his commitment to helping to make Toy Storage Nation the voice of the RV and boat storage industry that it is today.”

Koenig brings invaluable discipline and experience to his new role as Advisory Board Chair. He sped through higher education studies at University of California, Davis, graduating the four-year bachelor’s in business program in three years while earning honors. Since then, he successfully developed retail and industrial properties in Napa Valley for Pacific Union Property Advisors LLC, before starting a property tax appeal business under a new company, Pacific Property Advisors Inc. Currently, he has developed, owns and is in the process of developing approximately $200 million in storage projects in California.

“I look forward to advancing the Class A RV Boat Storage business model and sharing my years of knowledge to those who are interested or new to this market,” stated Koenig. “Coming from the development/ownership side, I hope to offer unbiased and objective opinions on this asset class to our TSN audience.”

As the voice of the RV and boat industry, Toy Storage Nation is the industry’s only fully dedicated educational and networking resource for developers, owners, operators and investors in RV and boat storage facilities. The organization hosts quarterly, one-day workshops throughout the country to accelerate attendees’ journey to success. In addition, Toy Storage Nation recently launched a new membership program that offers huge vendor discounts and unparalleled networking opportunities for industry newcomers and veterans. LOS ANGELES – March 15, 2023 -- LaTerra Development, a leading Los Angeles-based developer, has named Bryan Miranda, formerly Western Regional Vice President for Public Storage (NYSE:PSA), as Managing Director of LaTerra Storage to lead expansion of the self-storage company.

As head of development in the Western United States for Public Storage, the largest self-storage REIT in the world, Miranda completed over $1 billion of self-storage development during his nearly 10 years with the company.

“It’s possible Bryan has developed more self storage than anyone on the planet,” said Chris Tourtellotte, Managing Director for LaTerra Development.  “We look forward to his leadership in creating a preeminent self-storage company with us.  In addition to building ground-up storage facilities, we anticipate growing new investment vehicles such as value add and build-to-core.”

In 2022, LaTerra announced its formation of a self-storage development platform and formed a joint venture with a fund managed by Macquarie Asset Management to deploy up to $300 million in self-storage developments initially concentrated in Los Angeles and other Southern California markets.

LaTerra Storage already has five self-storage facilities underway in Metro Los Angeles and a 190,000 square foot facility (that includes boat and RV storage) in Irving, Texas.

“Self-storage is complementary to our core apartment development business,” notes Tourtellotte.  LaTerra is one of the largest multifamily developers in the Los Angeles Metro Area with approximately 3,000 apartments currently in development.  LaTerra has additional properties underway in various locations throughout the western Sun Belt.

“Self-storage is part of the neighborhood ecosystem and supports housing density and small businesses, a primary goal for LaTerra,” Tourtellotte adds.

Prior to his role at Public Storage, Miranda was Senior Vice President with LNR Property Corporation and its affiliates where he acquired and developed real estate projects in multiple states.  He is a graduate of Loyola Marymount University with a degree in accounting.  He started his career with Coopers & Lybrand, now PriceWaterhouseCoopers.

Miranda is based in LaTerra’s Century City headquarters.

Businesses Impacted by Storms Now Eligible for Emergency Tax Relief

SACRAMENTO – Business owners and taxpayers impacted by California’s winter storms are now eligible for emergency tax relief from late payment interest and penalties.

“California is moving with the urgency this moment demands, rapidly bringing support to Californians recovering from the devastating impact of the recent storms,” said Governor Gavin Newsom. “Business owners across the state can now access much-needed assistance to help accelerate their recovery efforts, including relief from interest and penalties.”

Impacts of the storms have been felt throughout the state, and small business owners who have been affected by flooding, power outages, and other storm-related hardships may request up to an additional three months to file their tax returns. Taxpayers who face return deadlines between January 4, 2023 and January 31, 2023 who are granted relief will not have to pay interest and penalties if they are unable to file their returns and pay taxes and fees by the original due date.

“Help is available for California businesses,” California Department of Tax and Fee Administration Director Nick Maduros said. “If you cannot file or make a payment on time because of the storms, please reach out to us, and we can offer some relief.”

    Impacted taxpayers can request relief:

    • On the CDTFA website
    • By mail at California Department of Tax and Fee Administration, PO Box 942879, MIC 35, Sacramento, CA 94279
    • In person at one of our field offices
    • By phone at 1-800-400-7115 (CRS:711), Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Pacific Time), except state holidays.

Customers can also contact CDTFA to update account information, change an address or contact information, request replacement copies of CDTFA tax records, or ask questions about their account.

In addition to our State of Emergency Tax Relief webpage, information regarding relief requests is available in various languages online, via videos in English and Spanish, and on CDTFA’s Online Services webpage.

Over $165,000 Raised for Cancer Research by the California Self Storage Association and Its Members

For immediate release July 22, 2022.

    Contact: Jackie Kurtz, 949-748-5916/jackie@kureit.org

Kure It Cancer Research is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based out of Irvine, California. Kure It was started by US Storage Centers and Westport Properties founder, Barry Hoeven, after his own cancer diagnosis. The organization’s mission is to provide direct funding to support the brightest minds in translational research for underfunded cancers at leading cancer centers. With more than 90% of cancers being considered “underfunded,” Kure It provides research grants ranging from $50,000-$250,000 for researchers thinking outside the box with cutting edge projects and concepts. To date, Kure It has raised more than $12.6 million for cancer research and holds true to the belief, “Together We Can Eradicate Cancer”.

As the charity of choice for the California Self Storage Association, Kure It has worked closely with the CSSA, partnering together to help raise money for these worthy causes. Over the years Kure It has been a participant at the CSSA’s annual conferences, both in Napa and Balboa, hosting various fundraising events and displaying their Round Up for Research program to owners and operators in the self-storage industry.

During this year’s Balboa Owners Summit, Kure It took the stage at the conference and made an appeal to help award the next cancer research fund in the name of the California Self Storage Association. There was an overwhelming amount of support, with several owners standing up and making gifts on the spot. The event was a huge success with over $165,000 being raised during that quick ask. The pledges made that day will be added to funds from the 2021 events along with the CSSA Napa Conference to award a cancer research grant at a Comprehensive Cancer Center in California in honor of the CSSA and its members.

Kure It would like to recognize those that stood up and pledged their support to make this new research grant possible.
