Celebrating the Success of the 18th Annual Self Storage Owners Summit 2023

Unfolding on July 13, 2023, the 18th Annual Self Storage Owners Summit, hosted by the California Self Storage Association (CSSA) and Talonvest, was a resounding success and a day to remember. With record-setting attendance of over 420 attendees, the event left us all with a sense of excitement and anticipation for the future of the self-storage industry

A Venue Like No Other

The Balboa Bay Resort, the only Forbes Four-Star, AAA Four-Diamond waterfront resort in Newport Beach, provided an idyllic backdrop for our gathering. Overlooking the serene Newport Bay, this 15-acre paradise set the tone for a day of insightful discussions, networking, and learning.

Networking Breakfast

The day kicked off with a networking breakfast, hosted by Kure It, a non- profit organization dedicated to research for cancer and other life threatening diseases. The breakfast was a fantastic opportunity for attendees to connect, share ideas, and prepare for the day ahead. Chris Sonne from Newmark led an engaging discussion titled “Everything, Everywhere, All at Once,” setting the stage for the insightful sessions that followed.

Inspirational Keynote Speakers

Our industry keynote speaker, Joseph D. Russell, President & Chief Executive Officer of Public Storage, joined forces with session moderator Spenser Allaway, senior analyst on Green Street's research team and sector head of net lease, gaming, and self-storage. Their engaging presentation, complete with data-rich slides, gave us a sneak peek into Public Storage's technology ecosystem, providing a fascinating look at the intersection of technology and self-storage.

Engaging Investment Panel

The investment panel, featuring top industry leaders and innovators, was a highlight of the summit. The panel included H. Michael Schwartz, Founder, Chairman, CEO-SmartStop Self Storage REIT, Inc., Gary Sugarman, COO- William Warren Group, Zach Harding, CIO- Andover Properties, Tyler Colpini, CEO- Safely Store Self Storage, and Eric Snyder, Principal- Talonvest Capital, INC. Their grounded yet hopeful insights on the current economic and financial trajectory of the self-storage industry left attendees with a clear understanding of the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in our industry.

Networking Opportunities

In addition to the informative sessions, the event provided ample opportunities for attendees to connect and engage with fellow professionals. Interactive discussions, break sessions, and closing reception facilitated meaningful conversations and collaborations among participants. Attendees enjoyed a live band and a magnificent view of Balboa bay at our closing reception while making memorable connections. 

The 18th Annual Self Storage Owners Summit was a testament to the strength and unity of our industry. The event was filled with laughter, learning, and lasting connections. As we reflect on the success of this year's summit, we eagerly look forward to next year's event on July 18th.
